ACHIEVE,INC - Action for Health Initiatives, Inc. (Added June 24 2007)

Founded in 2000, Action for Health Initiatives (ACHIEVE), Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization based in Quezon City, Philippines. ACHIEVE is engaged in the development and implementation of an action-research program on mobility and health, specifically addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights and HIV vulnerability of migrant workers and their families. ACHIEVE values partnership and linkage-building with other stakeholders working on issues affecting migrant workers, their families, people living with HIV/AIDS and women.

ACHIEVE is a member of the Coordination of Action Research on AIDS and Mobility in Asia (CARAM-Asia), a regional network of organizations working on migration and HIV/AIDS issues in the Asian region.

1. Institutional Advocacy and Capacity Building

ACHIEVE proactively engages various institutions and agencies in developing and enhancing perspectives, policies, structures and systems to facilitate the implementation of responses to HIV vulnerability of migrant workers and their families. Such advocacy is accompanied with skills building activities to strengthen their capacity to institute such measures. Through stakeholders' fora, workshops, training and seminars, ACHIEVE has been able to contribute significantly in the development and implementation of such initiatives. ACHIEVE has conducted trainings and seminars for and with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, local government units, NGOs and other private institutions.

2. Community-based Education Program on HIV and AIDS and Migration

ACHIEVE believes that community-based responses to HIV and AIDS are more sustainable and effective. Since 2001, ACHIEVE has developed and implemented HIV education programmes with communities and organizations of migrant workers and female spouses in selected sites in the country. These include Antique Province, Davao City, Mountain Province and Ifugao.

3. Regional Campaigns Program

As a member of CARAM-Asia, ACHIEVE participates in regional campaigns such as Access to Health for Migrants, Empowerment of Migrant Workers Living with HIV, Campaign Against Mandatory HIV Antibody testing; and, Domestic Workers’ Health and Rights.. Since its inception, ACHIEVE has undertaken national advocacies and campaigns on these issues, in partnership with migrant workers and other stakeholders. ACHIEVE has undertaken capacity building initiatives with migrant workers to enhance their involvement in education, advocacy and networking activities.

4. National Campaigns Programs
Information Production and Management

ACHIEVE undertakes production and management of information on migration, health, gender and sexuality. This entails operating a resource center, maintenance of a website and monitoring of media information. ACHIEVE produces information with and for migrant workers for purposes of policy and program advocacy.

Public Awareness-Raising

In order to raise public awareness on migration and HIV/AIDS issues, ACHIEVE conducts seminars and workshops for various sectors and the general public. ACHIEVE also organizes events and activities on occasion of World AIDS Day (December 1) and the AIDS Candlelight Memorial (third Sunday of May).

5. Women and HIV/AIDS Program

ACHIEVE has embarked on initiatives to address HIV and AIDS concerns affecting women. These include conducting workshops on gender, sexuality and reproductive health for various groups and sectors including women living with HIV. Currently, ACHIEVE provides technical support for Babae Plus, an organization of women living with HIV. ACHIEVE advocates for the integration of women’s issues as well as other gender and sexuality issues in HIV and AIDS responses.
